How to use car jack safely?

To use a car jack safely, always park on a hard, level surface, engage the parking brake, and use wheel chocks. Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack; instead, use jack stands, and position them under the designated support points. Ensure the jack's weight capacity is sufficient for the vehicle and place the jack at the correct lifting point, found in the owner's manual.

Before you start

  • Park on a flat, hard surface like concrete or asphalt.
  • Engage the parking brake and place the car in "Park" or in gear.
  • Use wheel chocks to block the wheels that will remain on the ground to prevent the car from rolling.
  • Make sure no one else is in the vehicle while it's being jacked.

Jacking the vehicle

  • Check that the jack's weight capacity is greater than the vehicle's weight and that it's in good working order.
  • Locate the correct jacking point on the vehicle, as specified in the owner's manual.
  • Position the jack correctly and begin to lift the vehicle slowly until the tire is just off the ground.

Working with the vehicle

  • Never: get under the vehicle when it is supported only by a jack. Use jack stands for support.
  • Place jack stands under the designated support points before lowering the vehicle onto them. Do this gently and slowly.
  • After the vehicle is securely on the jack stands, the jack can be used as an additional safety measure but should not be the sole support.

Additional tips

  • Always keep the jack and the area around it clear.
  • If you are unsure, consult your car's manual or a professional.
