Nissan GT-R R35 Uneven Tyre Wear: What Alignment Can and Cannot Fix
Quick answer
Wheel alignment can correct adjustable geometry that is contributing to uneven tyre wear, but it cannot repair a damaged tyre, bent wheel or worn suspension component. On an R35 GT-R, the wear pattern, pressure history, wheel balance and vehicle condition should be considered together.
Read the old tyres before replacing them
Used tyres are a record of how the vehicle has been operating. Inner-edge wear may be associated with geometry, but no single pattern proves a cause without measurement. Wear on both shoulders can be consistent with underinflation or high load, while centre wear, scalloping or localised damage suggest different checks.
For the GT-R shown in this workshop series, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres were fitted in 255/40R20 front and 285/35R20 rear sizes, followed by alignment. We have not claimed a before-and-after alignment result because measured values were not supplied for publication.
What alignment can address
Where the vehicle provides adjustment and components are sound, alignment can bring toe, camber or other relevant angles towards the intended target. It can also centre the steering and confirm whether left-to-right readings are consistent with the chosen setup.
For a modified performance car, the target needs context. A road-oriented setting and a competition-oriented setting may pursue different priorities. The owner should understand any compromise in wear, response and stability.
What alignment cannot address
Alignment does not cure:
- tyre separation or impact damage;
- a buckled or cracked wheel;
- incorrect wheel balance;
- worn bushes, joints or bearings;
- an unsuitable tyre size or rating;
- pressure neglect;
- damage that prevents stable adjustment.
Those issues need diagnosis and repair before alignment can be considered complete.
Why staggered tyres need regular observation
The R35 fitment here uses different front and rear sizes, so routine front-to-rear rotation is not available. If an inner shoulder is wearing quickly, it can be easy to miss during a casual walk-around. Inspect the full tread width and compare left with right.
Check pressures cold and use the vehicle guidance appropriate to the actual setup. Do not compensate for suspected alignment problems by inventing a pressure setting.
When to book a check
Arrange an inspection after a significant impact, suspension work or ride-height change, or when the steering wheel moves off-centre. Early measurement is generally more useful than waiting until cords or severe shoulder wear become visible.
Our wheel alignment Adelaide page explains the service. For replacement options, see Michelin tyres and the broader tyre range.
FAQ
Will new tyres hide an alignment problem?
They may temporarily change the feel, but incorrect geometry can begin wearing the new tread immediately.
Is inner-edge wear always caused by camber?
No. Toe, pressure, load, suspension condition and use can interact. Measure before concluding.
How often should an R35 be aligned?
There is no single interval for every car. Check after impacts or changes and whenever symptoms or wear justify it.
