Northern Territory Legal Wheel Modification Rules: NT Wheel and Tyre Guide
The Northern Territory has many vehicles used for long-distance touring, remote work and 4WD travel. That makes wheel and tyre choice important, but road compliance still matters.
The national technical baseline is VSB 14 Section LS: Tyres, Rims, Suspension and Steering. NT vehicle modification and inspection requirements should be checked before fitting non-standard wheels, tyres or suspension combinations.
Quick Answer for the NT
Aftermarket wheels can be legal in the Northern Territory when they keep the vehicle within safe technical limits. The tyres must not protrude beyond guards, must not rub, must keep correct load and speed ratings, and must not rely on ordinary wheel spacers.
Wheel Spacers in the Northern Territory
VSB 14 says wheel spacers or adaptors between the wheel mounting face and road wheel must not be used unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer. NT drivers should treat aftermarket spacers as non-compliant unless formal approval has been confirmed.
Offset, Track and 4WD Touring Loads
Under VSB 14 guidance:
- Passenger car wheel track must not increase by more than 25 mm beyond the manufacturer's maximum.
- Eligible off-road 4WD and goods vehicles may allow up to 50 mm wheel track increase.
- Tyres must remain inside guards or flares.
- Wheels must not touch steering, suspension, brakes, chassis or bodywork.
Touring loads make clearance more important. A tyre that clears when empty may rub when the vehicle is loaded with camping gear, tools, water, drawers or a trailer ball load.
Tyre Diameter in the NT
Passenger cars are generally limited to 15 mm larger or 26 mm smaller overall tyre diameter than a manufacturer-designated tyre. Some eligible off-road and goods vehicles may allow up to 50 mm larger diameter.
Larger tyres affect speedometer accuracy, braking, gearing and electronic safety systems. This is especially relevant for 4WDs used on highways and remote roads.
NT Fitment Checklist
- Start with the tyre placard and manufacturer options.
- Check wheel load rating and tyre load index.
- Calculate diameter and track change.
- Check clearance at full lock and loaded suspension compression.
- Confirm guard coverage.
- Avoid spacers unless original equipment or formally approved.
- Confirm NT inspection or approval requirements before fitting aggressive sizes.

Treat spacers as not allowed unless original equipment or specifically approved.
Can I fit bigger tyres for NT touring?
Often, but only within the allowed vehicle category, diameter, track, load rating and clearance limits.
