A proper puncture repair starts with inspection, not with a plug. For a suitable tread-area puncture, an internal mushroom plug-patch is the preferred professional method because it seals the injury channel and reinforces the inner liner from inside the tyre. When the puncture is in the repairable tread area, the casing is undamaged and the repair is completed correctly, the tyre can normally stay in service until the tyre reaches the end of its normal usable life.

The important limit is location. Punctures close to the shoulder or sidewall are not suitable for repair under Australian tyre repair practice and tyre manufacturer guidance. The sidewall flexes heavily, carries structural load and cannot be safely reinforced by a standard tread-area repair. If a nail or screw is too close to the sidewall, the correct recommendation is tyre replacement.

Confirm the tyre size, load rating and condition.
Inspect the puncture location before promising a repair.
Remove the wheel and deflate safely.
Mark the TPMS valve position where fitted.
Remove the tyre and inspect the inner liner.
Reject the repair if there is shoulder, sidewall, run-flat, heat or casing damage.
Prepare the injury channel and inner liner.
Install an internal mushroom plug-patch.
Refit, inflate and leak-test.
Check the other three tyre pressures before handover.
