Western Australia Legal Wheel Modification Rules: WA Wheel and Tyre Guide
Western Australia classifies light vehicle modifications by complexity. Some tyre size and aspect ratio changes may sit in a minor category, but that does not mean every wheel or tyre package is automatically legal.
The technical baseline remains VSB 14 Section LS: Tyres, Rims, Suspension and Steering, together with the Department of Transport WA's current light vehicle modification requirements.
Quick Answer for WA
Aftermarket wheels can be legal in WA when the fitment remains within accepted safety and compliance limits. Tyres must not protrude past guards, must not rub, must have correct load and speed ratings, and must not rely on ordinary wheel spacers.
WA Minor Modification Does Not Mean Unlimited Fitment
WA lists tyre size and aspect ratio among minor modifications that may not require a permit in some cases. The important limitation is that the vehicle must still comply with vehicle standards, ADR requirements, tyre placard logic and safe fitment principles.
If a wheel package changes track, diameter, clearance, braking, steering or suspension behaviour too far, it may move beyond a simple minor change.
Wheel Spacers in WA
VSB 14 says wheel spacers or adaptors between the wheel mounting face and road wheel must not be used unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer. WA drivers should treat aftermarket spacers as non-compliant unless a valid approval pathway has been confirmed before fitting.
Offset, Track and Tyre Poke
Under VSB 14 guidance:
- Passenger car wheel track must not increase by more than 25 mm beyond the manufacturer's maximum.
- Eligible off-road 4WD and goods vehicles may allow up to 50 mm track increase.
- Tyres must stay inside the bodywork or mudguards, including flares.
- Wheels must not contact the body, chassis, steering, brakes or suspension.
Aggressive offset wheels on utes and 4WDs need careful checking because tyre poke is easy to see and easy to defect.
Tyre Diameter in WA
For ordinary passenger cars, VSB 14 limits tyre overall diameter to no more than 15 mm larger or 26 mm smaller than a manufacturer-designated tyre. Some eligible off-road and goods vehicles may allow up to 50 mm larger diameter.
Diameter changes affect speedometer accuracy, braking, gearing and electronic stability control, so they should be calculated before fitting.
WA Fitment Checklist
- Check the tyre placard and manufacturer optional sizes.
- Confirm load rating and speed rating.
- Calculate diameter change and track change.
- Confirm guard coverage.
- Check full-lock and loaded suspension clearance.
- Avoid spacers unless original equipment or approved.
- Check whether the modification remains minor or needs inspection/engineering.
